Charles Bawden

Charles Bawden (1924-2018) was a British Mongolist scholar. He was a leading figure in the field of Mongolian studies for much of the second half of the 20th century and early 21st century. Bawden's work encompassed various aspects of Mongolian language, literature, history, and culture.

He held a professorship at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, where he taught Mongolian language and literature for many years. Bawden contributed significantly to the development of Mongolian studies in the West.

His publications include grammars and dictionaries of the Mongolian language, as well as translations and analyses of Mongolian literary works. He is particularly known for his work on Mongolian oral traditions and folk literature. His research shed light on the cultural and historical context of Mongolian society. Some of his major publications include "The Mongol Chronicle Altan Tobči" and "A Modern Mongolian-English Dictionary."

Bawden was a respected scholar who mentored generations of Mongolists. His contributions to the field continue to be influential in contemporary Mongolian studies.
