Megaera (Hades)
Megaera is one of the three Fury sisters featured in Supergiant Games' roguelike dungeon crawler, Hades. In Greek mythology, the Erinyes (Furies) are goddesses of vengeance, born from the blood of Uranus when Cronus castrated him. Megaera, whose name means "the jealous one," embodies the punishment of crimes, particularly those involving infidelity, oath-breaking, and hubris.
In Hades, Megaera serves as a subordinate of Hades in the Underworld and acts as one of the first major bosses players will encounter. She is depicted as a winged, powerful warrior who wields a whip and commands the bats and lava of the Asphodel region. She is characterized by her fiery temper, her strict adherence to the rules of the Underworld, and her complicated, sometimes antagonistic, sometimes intimate relationship with Zagreus, the protagonist and son of Hades.
Megaera is one of the romanceable characters in Hades. Developing a bond with her requires gifting her with Nectar and completing certain story-related conditions. The nature of her relationship with Zagreus is often fraught with conflict due to their opposing goals and the rules governing the Underworld, yet it is also marked by a deep, underlying affection. Her dialogue and character arc explore themes of duty, loyalty, and the complexities of love in the context of eternal torment. She provides valuable insight into the lore and workings of the Underworld as Zagreus attempts to escape.
