Carwynnen
Carwynnen is a location in Cornwall, England, most notably known for the Carwynnen Quoit, a restored dolmen (portal tomb) of Neolithic origin.
The Carwynnen Quoit (also sometimes spelled Carwynen Quoit) consists of the remains of a burial chamber comprised of large standing stones and a capstone. The quoit suffered damage in the 19th century when it was deliberately toppled and its stones were partially buried.
In 2011, a community project led by the 'Men Scryfa Project', along with support from various organizations and volunteers, initiated the re-erection and restoration of the quoit. This involved meticulous archaeological investigation and careful placement of the original stones, returning the Carwynnen Quoit to its approximate original form.
Today, the Carwynnen Quoit stands as a significant archaeological site, offering insight into prehistoric burial practices and serving as a testament to community efforts in preserving Cornish heritage. The site is accessible to the public and contributes to the understanding of Neolithic landscapes in the region. The surrounding area also holds historical and archaeological interest, with evidence of other ancient settlements and features.
