John Law (bishop)
John Law (1745 – 1827) was an Irish Anglican clergyman who served as the Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh from 1782 to 1787, then as Bishop of Killala and Achonry from 1787 to 1795, and finally as Bishop of Elphin from 1795 until his death.
Law was born in Rathmelton, County Donegal, Ireland. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin. Before his consecration as bishop, he held the position of Archdeacon of Rochester.
His episcopal career spanned several decades, during which time he held progressively more significant dioceses within the Church of Ireland. He is noted primarily for his service within the Irish Church and for his longevity in the office of bishop. His tenure coincided with a period of significant political and social upheaval in Ireland, including the 1798 Rebellion and the Act of Union in 1800.
