Amitié (submarine communications cable)

Amitié is a high-capacity transatlantic submarine communications cable system connecting the United States and Europe. It is owned and operated by a consortium of companies, including Orange, Aqua Comms, and Microsoft.

The cable runs between Lynn, Massachusetts, in the United States and Bordeaux, France, and also has a branching unit connecting to Bude, Cornwall, in the United Kingdom. This infrastructure provides critical bandwidth for internet traffic and other data transmission between North America and Europe.

Amitié utilizes state-of-the-art fiber optic technology to achieve high data transfer rates. It is designed with multiple fiber pairs to ensure significant capacity and redundancy. Its construction and deployment were aimed at improving network resilience and reducing latency for internet users on both sides of the Atlantic.

The cable is named "Amitié," which is French for "Friendship," signifying the collaborative nature of the project and the strengthening of ties between the participating countries. The cable became ready for service in 2022. The deployment of Amitié significantly enhanced global internet infrastructure by increasing available bandwidth and improving overall network performance.
