Caldera (band)
Caldera was an American jazz fusion band active primarily in the 1970s. Formed in Los Angeles, California, they are notable for their sophisticated compositions, intricate arrangements, and a blend of jazz, Latin, and progressive rock influences.
The band's core members included Eduardo del Barrio (keyboards), Jorge Strunz (guitar), Carlos Rios (guitar), Dean Cortez (bass), Steve Tavaglione (saxophone), and Mike Azevedo (percussion). Various other musicians contributed to their recordings and performances throughout their career.
Caldera released several albums during their active years, including Caldera (1976), Sky Islands (1977), Time and Chance (1978), and Are You Listening (1979). Their music featured complex rhythms, melodic improvisation, and a strong emphasis on ensemble playing.
While Caldera did not achieve mainstream commercial success, they gained a dedicated following among jazz fusion enthusiasts. Their music is still appreciated for its originality and musicianship. After the band dissolved, its members pursued individual careers in music, often in session work, composing, and teaching. Jorge Strunz later formed the successful guitar duo Strunz & Farah.
