Pink gin
Pink gin is a cocktail traditionally made with gin and Angostura bitters. The drink's name derives from the pink hue imparted by the bitters.
Preparation
The simplest preparation involves adding a few dashes of Angostura bitters to a measure of gin and stirring. The ratio of gin to bitters can vary based on preference, but a common starting point is 2 oz (60ml) of gin to 2-3 dashes of bitters. Some variations call for adding a small amount of chilled water or ice to dilute the drink. Garnishing with a lemon or orange peel is also common.
History and Origins
The exact origin of pink gin is somewhat obscure, but it is generally believed to have originated in the mid-19th century with the British Royal Navy. Angostura bitters were often used as a remedy for seasickness and stomach ailments, and gin was a readily available spirit. Mixing the two created a palatable and potentially medicinal drink. Pink gin became popular in England and later spread to other parts of the world.
Variations
While the classic recipe is simple, variations exist. Some recipes might include other bitters, a small amount of sugar syrup for sweetness, or different types of gin. Pre-bottled pink gin is also available, often flavored with botanicals and fruit extracts, resulting in a sweeter and more complex flavor profile than the traditional mix.
