Thomas Norris (died 1599)

Thomas Norris (d. 1599) was an English soldier and administrator who served extensively in Ireland during the late 16th century. He was a prominent figure during the Nine Years' War, a major rebellion against English rule led by Hugh O'Neill, Earl of Tyrone.

Norris was a member of the Norris family of Rycote, Oxfordshire, a family with significant military and political connections. He entered military service and gained experience in various campaigns before being appointed to posts of responsibility in Ireland.

He served as Vice-President of Munster and was heavily involved in attempts to suppress unrest and assert English authority in the province. He was knighted in 1596. Norris frequently clashed with local Irish lords and faced numerous challenges due to limited resources and the widespread resistance to English rule.

During the Nine Years' War, Sir Thomas Norris played a crucial role in leading English forces against Tyrone and his allies. He participated in several significant engagements and was known for his aggressive tactics. He notably led forces against the Earl of Tyrone in Ulster.

Norris died of wounds sustained in battle in 1599. His death was a blow to English efforts in Ireland, as he was considered a capable and experienced commander. His service in Ireland reflected the ongoing conflict and the difficulties faced by the English in establishing firm control over the country.
