Buck buck

Buck buck, also sometimes referred to as "Johnny on the Pony," "Pony Pile," or other regional variations, is a children's game, generally played in outdoor spaces. The game involves one team leaning against a wall or other support (or each other, in a line) and the other team jumping onto their backs, aiming to pile on until the base collapses or some other predetermined condition is met.

The team on the bottom forms a long "horse" by bending over and clasping onto the legs of the person in front of them. The first player in the line leans against a wall or other stable object. The jumping team then lines up and, one by one, jumps onto the backs of the "horse," attempting to ride.

Common objectives for the jumping team include:

  • Successfully mounting the entire team without the "horse" collapsing.
  • Calling out a secret word or phrase agreed upon beforehand, proving they have successfully piled on.

The "horse" team attempts to dislodge the jumping team by moving, bucking, or collapsing their formation. The game continues until one team succeeds or a predetermined number of rounds are played.

Variations exist regarding the rules, such as:

  • Whether players are allowed to jump on the shoulders of the "horse."
  • The method for determining which team goes first.
  • Specific rules for calling out the secret word or phrase.

While traditionally considered a children's game, it poses a risk of injury due to the potential for falls or strain on the lower back. As such, responsible supervision and clear rules are important to minimize the risk of harm.
