Brian Doyle (Canadian writer)

Brian Doyle (1935 – 2008) was a Canadian children's and young adult author known for his realistic and humorous novels set primarily in the Ottawa, Ontario area. He is celebrated for his accessible prose, engaging characters, and sensitive exploration of themes such as family relationships, bullying, loss, and the power of imagination.

Doyle was born in Ottawa and spent much of his life in the region, which served as a primary source of inspiration for his writing. Before becoming a full-time author, he worked as a high school teacher for many years.

His notable works include Hey Dad!, Angel Square, Easy Avenue, Spud Sweetgrass, Mary Ann Alice, and Covered Bridge. Angel Square, which deals with prejudice and mystery in post-World War II Ottawa, is perhaps his best-known and most critically acclaimed novel, winning the Governor General's Award for Children's Literature in 1990.

Doyle's writing often features ordinary children facing challenging situations, and he was praised for his ability to capture the voice and perspective of young people.
