Breastplate (tack)

A breastplate, in the context of equestrian tack, is a piece of equipment designed to prevent a saddle from slipping backwards, especially during strenuous activity such as jumping, galloping, or navigating steep terrain. It is typically made of leather, nylon, or a combination of materials, and it attaches to the saddle at several points: usually the D-rings at the front of the saddle, the girth, and sometimes the billets.

The breastplate functions by distributing pressure across the horse's chest, rather than solely relying on the girth's position. This distribution of pressure helps to hold the saddle in place. Different styles of breastplates exist, varying in the complexity of their design and the number of attachment points. Some are simple straps that cross the chest, while others incorporate a more elaborate design that offers greater stability and adjustment.

Fit is crucial for a breastplate to function effectively and comfortably for the horse. It should be adjusted so that it is snug enough to prevent saddle slippage, but not so tight that it restricts the horse's movement or breathing. The breastplate should also be checked regularly for signs of wear and tear, and properly maintained to ensure its longevity and effectiveness.
