Bosellia
Bosellia is a genus of sacoglossan sea slugs, marine opisthobranch gastropod mollusks in the family Boselliidae. These small sea slugs are characterized by their flattened, leaf-like bodies and their specialized feeding habits.
Bosellia are herbivorous and feed primarily on the sap of the algae they consume. They accomplish this by piercing the algal cells with a specialized tooth on their radula and sucking out the contents. This feeding behavior leads to the accumulation of chloroplasts from the algae within the sea slug's digestive system, a process known as kleptoplasty. These sequestered chloroplasts continue to photosynthesize within the sea slug, providing it with additional energy.
Species within the genus Bosellia are typically found in shallow, tropical and subtropical waters, often associated with the specific algal species they feed upon. Their coloration and patterns often provide camouflage, blending them with their algal food source.
The taxonomic classification of Bosellia and related genera within the Boselliidae has been subject to revision and debate, with ongoing research utilizing molecular and morphological data to better understand their evolutionary relationships. Key features used in their identification include the morphology of the radula, the shape of the body, and the color patterns.
