Lip strap

A lip strap is a narrow strap, usually made of leather, that is part of a horse's bridle. It is typically attached to the rings of a curb bit and runs under the horse's lower lip.

The primary function of a lip strap is to keep the curb chain properly positioned in the curb groove. The curb chain applies pressure to the horse's jaw when the reins attached to the curb bit are engaged, acting as a brake. The lip strap prevents the curb chain from sliding up and off of the curb groove, ensuring consistent and effective pressure.

Additionally, the lip strap helps to prevent the horse from grabbing the curb chain with its lips or teeth, which could damage the chain or affect its proper function. In some disciplines, a lip strap may also offer a more finished and professional appearance to the bridle.

The tightness of the lip strap is crucial. It should be snug enough to prevent the curb chain from moving but not so tight as to cause discomfort or interfere with the horse's normal mouth movement. There should typically be enough room to insert one or two fingers between the lip strap and the horse's lip.
