Bohora

The Bohras are a Shia Muslim community, primarily of Indian origin. The term "Bohra" is derived from the Gujarati word "vohrau," meaning "merchant," reflecting their historical occupation. They are a distinct community within Shia Islam, known for their unique religious traditions, customs, and social practices.

There are two main branches of Bohras: Dawoodi Bohras and Sunni Bohras. The Dawoodi Bohras are the largest branch and are led by a Da'i al-Mutlaq, who serves as their spiritual leader. The Sunni Bohras, on the other hand, follow Sunni Islamic practices.

Dawoodi Bohras are known for their emphasis on education, community service, and entrepreneurship. They maintain close-knit communities and adhere to specific dietary and dress codes. Their religious practices include prayers, fasting during Ramadan, and pilgrimage to holy sites. They also have their own unique calendar and observe specific festivals.

The Bohra community has a significant presence in India, particularly in Gujarat and Maharashtra, but also has a diaspora across the globe, including in countries in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North America. They have made significant contributions to various fields, including business, education, and medicine.

The community is governed by a hierarchical structure headed by the Da'i al-Mutlaq, and local communities are managed by appointed representatives. The Bohra community maintains a strong emphasis on tradition and community solidarity.
