Baris (Pisidia)
Baris was an ancient city located in the region of Pisidia in Asia Minor. Its precise location is debated among scholars, but it is generally believed to have been situated in the northern part of Pisidia, potentially near the border with Phrygia.
Historically, Baris is known primarily from Roman and Byzantine sources. The city appears in various itineraries and lists of bishoprics from the period. Baris served as an episcopal see, and bishops from the city are recorded as participating in various church councils.
Archaeological evidence for Baris is relatively scarce compared to other Pisidian cities. Limited excavations have been conducted, and the visible remains at potential sites are not extensive. This lack of extensive archaeological data contributes to the ongoing uncertainty regarding its exact location.
The name "Baris" is thought to have a possible connection to a Phrygian word for "fortress" or "stronghold," which may reflect the city's strategic importance in antiquity. Information regarding the city’s role in the Roman and Byzantine periods beyond its ecclesiastical function remains limited.
