5 Ronin
5 Ronin is a comic book limited series published by Marvel Comics in 2011. Written by Peter Milligan, with art by various artists including Leandro Fernández and Goran Parlov, the series reimagines five Marvel characters – Wolverine, Hulk, Psylocke, Punisher, and Deadpool – as masterless samurai (ronin) in feudal Japan.
Each issue of the series focuses on one of the five ronin, detailing their individual stories and motivations as they are brought together by a common purpose: revenge against a corrupt and powerful figure. The characters retain elements of their original Marvel identities but are reinterpreted within the historical context of the samurai era. Their signature abilities are adapted to fit the time period; for example, Wolverine's healing factor manifests as exceptional resilience, and the Hulk's strength becomes a manifestation of uncontrollable rage.
The story blends elements of samurai fiction with familiar Marvel tropes, exploring themes of honor, revenge, duty, and redemption. The ronin must overcome their personal demons and disparate backgrounds to unite and achieve their collective goal. The narrative is presented in a gritty and realistic style, reflecting the harsh realities of feudal Japan. The series received generally positive reviews for its unique premise and character interpretations.
