Bardo (2021 film)
Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths, often shortened to Bardo, is a 2022 Mexican epic dark comedy-drama film directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The film stars Daniel Giménez Cacho and Griselda Siciliani.
The film follows Silverio Gama (Giménez Cacho), a renowned Mexican journalist and documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, as he grapples with an existential crisis upon being selected to receive a prestigious international award. He returns to his native Mexico City, confronting his identity, family relationships, memories, and the absurdity of life. The film is a semi-autobiographical exploration of Iñárritu's own experiences and anxieties related to immigration, success, and cultural identity.
Bardo premiered at the 79th Venice International Film Festival in September 2022 and was released in select theaters before streaming on Netflix in December 2022. The film received mixed reviews, with praise for its visual ambition and performances, but criticism for its length, perceived self-indulgence, and narrative complexity. It was selected as the Mexican entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards, but was not nominated.
