Bakenrenef (vizier)

Bakenrenef, also known by the Greek name Bocchoris, was an ancient Egyptian vizier who served during the late Third Intermediate Period, specifically during the 25th Dynasty. He is particularly associated with the reigns of pharaohs Piye, Shabaka, and possibly Shabataka.

Bakenrenef held the prestigious title of vizier, the highest official in the Egyptian administration after the pharaoh himself. As vizier, he was responsible for overseeing numerous aspects of the government, including justice, taxation, public works, and the management of state resources. He effectively acted as the pharaoh's chief administrator, ensuring the smooth functioning of the kingdom.

While specific details about his individual actions and decisions are scarce, his presence is attested through various inscriptions and monuments. These sources provide evidence of his important role at the royal court and his influence in state affairs. Bakenrenef's position signifies the continuation of the traditional Egyptian bureaucratic system during a period of foreign (Kushite) rule, illustrating the integration of native Egyptians into the administration.

He should not be confused with the earlier Pharaoh Bakenranef of the 24th Dynasty. While both figures share a similar name, they lived in different eras and held distinct roles within Egyptian history. The vizier Bakenrenef served under the Kushite pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty, while the pharaoh Bakenranef ruled independently during the short-lived 24th Dynasty in Sais.
