Moon Shin
Moon Shin (문신), also known as Tsukamoto Seiji (塚本誠二) during the Japanese colonial period, was a Korean sculptor and painter. Born in Masan, South Gyeongsang Province, in 1923 and passing away in 1995, Moon Shin is renowned for his symmetrical, geometrical sculptures, often featuring abstract forms inspired by nature, particularly insects and birds.
He spent a significant portion of his life in Paris, France, where he developed his distinctive artistic style and gained international recognition. His works are characterized by their smooth, polished surfaces and balanced compositions, reflecting his interest in mathematical principles and harmonious relationships.
Upon his return to Korea, Moon Shin established the Moon Shin Art Museum in Masan, which houses a comprehensive collection of his sculptures, paintings, and drawings, offering a valuable insight into his artistic evolution and legacy. He is considered a pivotal figure in Korean modern art, contributing significantly to the development of abstract sculpture in the country. His work is held in numerous public and private collections worldwide.
