Aspern
Aspern is a district (German: Bezirk) of Vienna, Austria. It is located in the 22nd district, Donaustadt. Historically, Aspern was a separate village that was incorporated into Vienna in 1904.
Aspern is best known as the site of the Battle of Aspern-Essling in 1809, a significant battle in the Napoleonic Wars. In this battle, the Austrian army, led by Archduke Charles, inflicted the first major tactical defeat on Napoleon's French army. The battle took place in and around the villages of Aspern and Essling (also part of Donaustadt).
Today, Aspern is undergoing significant development, particularly with the "Seestadt Aspern" project, one of Europe's largest urban development projects. Seestadt Aspern is a new city district built around a large artificial lake, designed to be a sustainable and innovative urban area with residential, commercial, educational, and recreational spaces.
The Lobau, a part of the Donau-Auen National Park, lies near Aspern, representing one of the last large intact floodplain landscapes in Central Europe.
