Arlanza (comarca)

The Arlanza is a comarca (administrative division, roughly equivalent to a county or district) located in the province of Burgos, within the autonomous community of Castile and León, Spain. It is primarily an agricultural area, noted for its wine production and historical significance.

Geographically, the Arlanza is defined by the Arlanza River, which flows through the region. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, vineyards, and cereal fields.

Historically, the Arlanza played a significant role during the Middle Ages. It was a border area between Christian and Muslim territories and is dotted with castles, monasteries, and fortified towns. The Monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza, located in Hortigüela, is a particularly important historical landmark, considered one of the cradles of the Castilian language.

Economically, the Arlanza relies heavily on agriculture. Wine production, under the Denominación de Origen Arlanza (D.O. Arlanza), is a key industry. Cereals, legumes, and livestock farming are also important. Rural tourism is increasingly contributing to the local economy, drawing visitors interested in the area's history, natural beauty, and wine culture.

The comarca comprises numerous municipalities, each with its own distinct character and historical significance. These include, but are not limited to, Lerma, Covarrubias, Hortigüela, and Villahoz.
