Thomas Barrett (bishop)

Thomas Barrett (died 1445) was an English Carmelite friar and prelate who served as Bishop of Annaghdown in Ireland.

Details of Barrett's early life are scant. He was a member of the Carmelite order and held doctorates in theology and sacred law. He was appointed Bishop of Annaghdown, a small and relatively poor diocese in the west of Ireland, on 29 January 1432. His appointment occurred by papal provision, meaning it was directly by the Pope rather than through local election.

Barrett is principally known for his efforts to improve the financial state of his diocese. He sought and obtained various papal indulgences which were granted to those who would donate to the cathedral church of Annaghdown. These indulgences, intended to attract pilgrims and their offerings, were a common strategy employed by prelates of impoverished sees during the period.

Barrett died in 1445. His episcopate was marked by efforts to bolster the economic viability of Annaghdown.
