Arkyidae
Arkyidae is a family of small to medium-sized sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks in the superfamily Arcoida, order Arcida. These bivalves are commonly known as ark clams or ark shells.
Characteristics:
Ark clams are characterized by their thick, trapezoidal or oblong shells, which are often ribbed. The hinge line is straight and elongated, with numerous small, transverse teeth. A thick, hairy periostracum (outer protein layer) typically covers the shell. The shell itself is usually white or cream-colored. The foot is relatively small and is used for limited movement or anchoring. They are filter feeders, extracting food particles from the water.
Distribution:
Ark clams are found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide. They inhabit a variety of substrates, including sand, mud, and rock.
Classification:
The classification of Arkyidae has undergone revisions over time. It is currently recognized as a family within the order Arcida. Genera within the family can vary based on different taxonomic schemes.
Relationship to Humans:
Some species of ark clams are commercially harvested for food in certain regions. They are also sometimes collected for their shells.
