Archangel (2017 video game)
Archangel is a virtual reality (VR) first-person shooter video game developed by Skydance Interactive and published by Skydance Media. It was released in July 2017 for the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and PlayStation VR platforms. A non-VR version was later released for PC and PlayStation 4.
The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a tyrannical corporation known as HUMNX controls the United States. Players take on the role of a pilot of a giant, customizable war machine, called an Archangel, and fight against HUMNX forces to protect the remnants of humanity.
Gameplay primarily involves piloting the Archangel through linear levels, engaging in combat with enemy vehicles, robots, and other threats. Players use motion controls (in VR) or traditional gamepad controls to maneuver the Archangel, utilize its various weapons systems, and defend against incoming attacks. The Archangel can be upgraded with new weapons, armor, and abilities, allowing players to tailor their combat style.
The narrative focuses on the struggle for freedom against oppressive corporate control and the importance of protecting the innocent. Key themes explored include resistance, sacrifice, and the human cost of war.
The game received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising its immersive VR experience and the sense of scale provided by piloting the Archangel. However, some criticized its linear level design and repetitive gameplay.
