Apasa (Echinades)

The Echinades (Ancient Greek: Ἐχινάδες νῆσοι) are a group of islands in western Greece, located off the coast of Acarnania, near the mouth of the Achelous River. They are part of the Ionian Islands and are administratively part of the regional unit of Cephalonia, though some are closer to the mainland.

Throughout history, the Echinades have been strategically important, particularly in naval conflicts. They were the site of the Battle of the Echinades in 435 BC, a significant naval battle in the lead-up to the Peloponnesian War.

The islands are generally small and rocky, and many are uninhabited. Over time, the alluvial deposits of the Achelous River have altered the landscape, with some islands becoming connected to the mainland. The ownership and identification of specific islands within the group has shifted over time, contributing to some ambiguity in their historical records.

The name "Echinades" is believed to be derived from the Greek word for sea urchins (echinos), likely due to the islands' spiky or jagged appearance when viewed from a distance.

Modern day, the islands have little strategic importance, with many being privately owned and used for recreation or as nature preserves. The islands are also a popular spot for yachting and tourism.
