Andreas Schulze (artist)

Andreas Schulze (born 1955) is a German artist known for his vibrant and surreal paintings, sculptures, and installations. His work often features biomorphic forms, bold colors, and a dreamlike quality, evoking a sense of the uncanny and the absurd.

Schulze studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Gerhard Richter from 1978 to 1981. He emerged as part of the "Junge Wilde" movement, a neo-expressionist wave of German artists in the 1980s who rejected conceptual art in favor of subjective and expressive painting. However, Schulze's work quickly developed its own distinct style, characterized by a more playful and deliberately ambiguous approach than some of his contemporaries.

His paintings often depict strange, organic shapes that seem to simultaneously suggest familiar objects and alien landscapes. The use of bright, almost fluorescent colors further enhances the surreal and unsettling effect. While seemingly abstract, many of his works allude to domestic scenes or familiar environments, subverting the viewer's expectations of normalcy.

Schulze's work has been exhibited extensively internationally, including solo shows at prominent museums and galleries. His pieces are included in numerous public and private collections. He continues to live and work in Cologne, Germany.
