Anastasia (wife of Constantine IV)

Anastasia was the Empress consort of Constantine IV, Byzantine Emperor from 668 to 685 AD. Her life is sparsely documented, and very little is known about her beyond her marriage and her role as Empress.

Her marriage to Constantine IV likely occurred prior to his ascension to the throne, as he was already co-emperor with his father Constans II before the latter's assassination in 668. Anastasia's most significant known contribution is that she was the mother of Justinian II, who succeeded his father as Emperor in 685. The birth of Justinian II is vital because it ensured the continuation of the Heraclian dynasty.

Beyond being the wife of Constantine IV and the mother of Justinian II, historical records offer little else about Anastasia's personality, activities, or influence within the Byzantine court. Her name suggests a possible connection to the earlier Anastasia, wife of Justinian I, but no concrete evidence supports any direct familial link.

Further research into Byzantine chronicles and hagiographies may potentially reveal more information about Anastasia, but currently, her life remains largely obscure.
