Amanat (political party)

Amanat, formerly known as Nur Otan (until March 2022), is the ruling political party in Kazakhstan. Founded on January 19, 1999, it has consistently held a majority in the Mazhilis, the lower house of the Kazakh Parliament.

Initially established as the "Otan" (Fatherland) party, it was later renamed "Nur Otan" (Radiant Fatherland) reflecting the influence of then-President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Nazarbayev served as the party's chairman until 2022.

The party espouses a platform that generally promotes stability, economic development, and social harmony within Kazakhstan. Its political ideology has been described as centrist or centre-right, emphasizing pragmatic policies and a strong role for the state in the economy. Under Nazarbayev's leadership, Nur Otan was a key vehicle for implementing government initiatives and consolidating power.

Following the January 2022 protests and subsequent political reforms initiated by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Nur Otan underwent a period of significant transformation. In March 2022, the party was renamed "Amanat" (Legacy or Mandate) as part of a broader effort to distance itself from the legacy of Nazarbayev and adapt to the evolving political landscape. Tokayev assumed the role of party leader.

Amanat continues to be a dominant force in Kazakh politics. Its current platform focuses on addressing social and economic challenges, promoting national unity, and strengthening democratic institutions. The party has pledged to support President Tokayev's reforms and ensure the continued stability and prosperity of Kazakhstan.
