Tragilus

Tragilus, sometimes spelled Tragilos, refers to an ancient city located in Thrace, near the Aegean coast. Its exact location is disputed, but it is generally placed near modern-day Nea Peramos, in the Kavala region of Greece.

Tragilus was likely founded by colonists from Thasos, an island located nearby. It appears to have been a relatively small settlement, and its historical significance stems primarily from its mention in ancient sources and its strategic location controlling access to resources and trade routes in the area.

Historical mentions of Tragilus are found in accounts relating to the Peloponnesian War and subsequent conflicts. The city was part of the Thasian peraia, the mainland territory controlled by the island. Control of Tragilus and other coastal settlements was frequently contested between Thasos, Athens, and various Thracian tribes. The city's prosperity depended significantly on agriculture and maritime trade.

Archaeological investigations have revealed traces of ancient walls and structures, confirming the existence of a settled area in the proposed location of Tragilus. However, extensive excavations have not been conducted, so a comprehensive understanding of the city's history and culture remains incomplete. The findings to date do suggest a settlement of some importance in the classical and Hellenistic periods.
