Al Perkins (children's writer)

Al Perkins (1904-1975) was an American children's author, best known for his work with Beginner Books, a division of Random House. These books were designed to help children learn to read using a limited vocabulary and engaging stories. Perkins worked alongside other prominent children's authors in this series, including Dr. Seuss and P.D. Eastman.

His most popular books include The Digging-est Dog, Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb (illustrated by Eric Gurney), King Midas and the Golden Touch, and Tubby and the Poo-Bah. Perkins' writing style is characterized by its simplicity, humor, and use of repetition, making his books accessible and enjoyable for young readers. His contributions to the Beginner Books series have helped generations of children develop a love for reading. Before his career in children's literature, he worked as a radio writer and advertising copywriter.
