Airport Circle (Pennsauken, New Jersey)

Airport Circle was a traffic circle located in Pennsauken Township, New Jersey, at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 (Admiral Wilson Boulevard), U.S. Route 130, and CR 644 (formerly NJ Route 43). It was a large, heavily trafficked rotary that served as a major gateway to Philadelphia via the nearby Betsy Ross Bridge. The circle gained notoriety for its congestion and perceived complexity, often considered a source of driver frustration.

Originally constructed in the early to mid-20th century, Airport Circle aimed to efficiently distribute traffic flow between the converging highways. However, as traffic volumes increased over the decades, the circle became increasingly problematic, experiencing frequent accidents and backups, particularly during peak hours.

In the early 2000s, recognizing the need for modernization and improved traffic flow, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) initiated a project to eliminate the traffic circle. Construction began in 2002 and was completed in 2004. The circle was replaced with an at-grade intersection with traffic signals, designed to handle the high volume of traffic more effectively and reduce congestion. The redesign also aimed to improve safety by eliminating weaving maneuvers associated with the rotary.

Today, the intersection functions as a conventional signalized intersection. While the name "Airport Circle" may still be used colloquially by some locals, the physical traffic circle no longer exists. The area is now characterized by its straight roadways and timed traffic lights.
