AMRO Bank

AMRO Bank was a major Dutch bank formed in 1964 through the merger of Amsterdamsche Bank and Rotterdamsche Bank. The name "AMRO" was a portmanteau derived from the first three letters of each of the founding banks' names.

Amsterdamsche Bank, founded in 1871, had its roots in several private banks dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Rotterdamsche Bank, established in 1863, also had a lineage traced to older private banking houses.

Throughout its existence, AMRO Bank provided a comprehensive range of financial services, including retail banking, commercial banking, investment banking, and asset management. It operated a substantial network of branches throughout the Netherlands and maintained a presence in international markets.

In 1990, AMRO Bank merged with Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN) to create ABN AMRO, one of the largest banks in the Netherlands and a significant global financial institution. The AMRO name, while no longer existing as an independent bank, continues to be remembered as an important part of Dutch banking history and the lineage of ABN AMRO.
