91st Street station (IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line)
The 91st Street station was a proposed, but never built, station on the IRT Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line of the New York City Subway. It was planned as part of the original dual contracts for the subway system in the early 20th century. The station was intended to be located at 91st Street and Broadway in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, between the existing 86th Street and 96th Street stations.
The primary reason for its omission was the challenging geological conditions encountered during the line's construction in that specific area. Shifting sands and difficult soil made building a station at that location prohibitively expensive and technically complex for the technology of the time. The planned station was ultimately scrapped to avoid significant delays and cost overruns for the overall Broadway–Seventh Avenue Line project.
While never constructed, the provisions for the 91st Street station remained on the original blueprints. Speculation and rumors about the potential for its future construction have occasionally surfaced, but no serious plans for its implementation have ever materialized. The substantial cost and engineering challenges associated with its construction, compounded by the proximity of the existing 86th Street and 96th Street stations, make its future development highly unlikely. The area where the station would have been has also been developed.
