2nd Armoured Brigade (Australia)

The 2nd Armoured Brigade was a formation of the Australian Army Reserve. It was one of two armoured brigades in the Australian Army, the other being the 1st Brigade, a regular army unit. The 2nd Armoured Brigade's role was to provide a deployable armoured capability within the Army Reserve.

The brigade's history can be traced back to the post-World War II reorganisation of the Australian Army. Throughout the Cold War, it was structured as a component of Australia's ready reserve, providing a significant armoured capability that could be mobilized in the event of a national emergency.

The units that comprised the 2nd Armoured Brigade varied over time, but typically included cavalry regiments equipped with armoured fighting vehicles (AFVs), such as Leopard AS1 main battle tanks (until their retirement), armoured personnel carriers (APCs), and supporting logistic and combat service support elements. The brigade drew its personnel from various states across Australia, with units located in major capital cities and regional centres.

Training exercises were a key part of the brigade's activities, with regular exercises conducted to maintain proficiency in armoured warfare tactics and procedures. These exercises often involved integration with other Army Reserve and Regular Army units.

The 2nd Armoured Brigade was eventually disbanded as part of wider reforms to the Australian Army Reserve. The specific timing and reasons for its disbandment should be verifiable through reputable sources such as the Australian War Memorial or the Australian Army History Unit.
