Lillian Watson (opera singer)

Lillian Watson (born 1947) is a British operatic soprano known for her roles in light opera and particularly for her interpretations of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Watson studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1968, initially as a chorister and understudy, and quickly rose to principal soprano roles. She was a principal soprano with the company until 1975, renowned for her portrayals of roles such as Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Elsie Maynard in The Yeomen of the Guard, Josephine in H.M.S. Pinafore, and Yum-Yum in The Mikado.

After leaving the D'Oyly Carte, Watson pursued a freelance career, performing with major opera companies and orchestras throughout the UK and internationally. She specialized in lighter repertoire, including works by Offenbach and Johann Strauss, as well as continuing to perform Gilbert and Sullivan. She made numerous recordings, including many of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. Her performances are often praised for their clarity of diction, vocal agility, and comedic timing.
