Jaime Sin

Jaime Lachica Sin (August 31, 1928 – June 21, 2005) was a Filipino Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church, and Archbishop of Manila from 1974 to 2003. He was a key figure in the People Power Revolution of 1986, which ousted President Ferdinand Marcos, and the Second People Power Revolution of 2001, which led to the removal of President Joseph Estrada.

Sin was born in New Washington, Aklan, Philippines. He was ordained a priest in 1954 and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Jaro in 1967. He became Archbishop of Jaro in 1972 and was elevated to Archbishop of Manila in 1974. He was created a Cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1976.

Throughout his tenure as Archbishop, Cardinal Sin was a vocal advocate for social justice, human rights, and democracy. He played a critical role in mobilizing public opposition to the Marcos regime, using the Church's influence and radio station, Radio Veritas, to disseminate information and encourage peaceful resistance. His call to action during the 1986 revolution, urging Filipinos to protect rebel soldiers, is widely credited with contributing to Marcos's downfall.

Cardinal Sin also spoke out against corruption, poverty, and other social ills in the Philippines. He remained a prominent figure in Filipino society until his retirement in 2003. He died in 2005 and is remembered as a national hero for his contributions to the country's democratic struggles.
