Bathouism

Bathouism is an indigenous religious belief system practiced primarily by the Sonowal Kacharis, an ethnic group of Assam, India. It is characterized by the worship of a supreme being known as Bathou Borai, along with other deities and spirits associated with nature.

Core Beliefs and Practices:

Bathouism revolves around the concept of a single, all-powerful God, Bathou Borai, who is considered the creator and sustainer of the universe. While Bathou Borai is the ultimate deity, the faith also encompasses the worship of other deities and spirits believed to inhabit the natural world. These deities represent different aspects of nature and are often propitiated for specific purposes such as good health, prosperity, and protection from harm.

Central to Bathouism is the Bathou Khundri, an altar made of a specific type of cactus plant, representing the deity Bathou Borai. Rituals and ceremonies are performed at the Bathou Khundri, led by priests known as Deoris. These rituals involve offerings of rice beer, betel nut, and other symbolic items.

Contemporary Status:

Bathouism continues to be practiced by the Sonowal Kachari community, although it faces challenges from the influence of other religions and modernization. Efforts are underway to preserve and promote Bathouism as an important aspect of the Sonowal Kachari cultural identity.
