- Gaius Marius, for the fourth time, and Quintus Lutatius Catulus serve as Roman consuls.
- The Battle of Aquae Sextiae takes place. Marius decisively defeats the Teutones, a Germanic tribe that had been raiding Roman territory. This significantly reduces the Germanic threat to Italy.
- The Roman army defeats the Cimbri near what is now Vercelli, in northern Italy. Catulus shares the triumph with Marius despite Marius being generally credited with the victory.
- The Aqua Marcia aqueduct is completed in Rome.
- The Marian reforms continue to reshape the Roman army, including professionalization and standardization of equipment.
