Zyzzyva (magazine)
Zyzzyva is a San Francisco-based literary magazine, founded in 1985 by Howard Junker. The magazine publishes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and interviews, with a focus on showcasing work by writers from the West Coast of the United States.
Named after the South American weevil, Zyzzyva (genus Zyzzyva, species Zyzzyva) which is often cited as the last word in many English dictionaries, the magazine aims to represent a diverse range of voices and perspectives. The name also reflects the magazine's position as a distinctive and somewhat unconventional presence in the literary landscape.
Zyzzyva is published three times a year. Over the years, it has featured early work by prominent authors and continues to champion emerging talent. The magazine is known for its high-quality writing and design. It accepts submissions through its website.
