Yuzu bath

A yuzu bath (柚子湯, yuzuyu) is a Japanese bathing tradition where whole yuzu citrus fruits are floated in a hot bath. This practice is particularly common during the winter solstice (冬至, tōji) as a way to ward off colds, warm the body, and promote good health.

Yuzu fruits, known for their fragrant peel and distinctive tartness, release their essential oils into the hot water when added to the bath. These oils are believed to have therapeutic properties, including improving circulation, relieving muscle aches, and moisturizing the skin. The scent of yuzu is also considered to be uplifting and stress-relieving.

The custom of taking a yuzu bath on the winter solstice is thought to have originated in the Edo period. Some believe that the practice is based on the idea of connecting with nature during the darkest time of the year, while others believe it stems from the fruit's association with good fortune and cleansing.

Beyond the purported health benefits, the bright yellow fruits floating in the bath create a visually appealing and aromatic bathing experience, making it a popular seasonal tradition in Japan. Whole yuzu fruits are most commonly used, but sliced fruits or yuzu extract are also sometimes added to the bathwater. In some regions, the leaves of the yuzu tree are also used.
