Xutuli
Xutuli is a traditional musical instrument from Assam, India. It is a chordophone, specifically a stringed instrument played with a bow. The Xutuli is constructed from bamboo or wood, and features a gourd resonator attached to one end. It typically has one or two strings made of silk or metal.
The Xutuli is primarily associated with the Deori tribe of Assam. It plays an important role in their traditional music and religious ceremonies, often used in devotional songs and folk performances. The instrument's sound is considered sacred and is believed to possess the power to invoke the divine.
Playing the Xutuli involves bowing the string(s) while simultaneously varying the pressure on the string with the fingers to produce different notes. The gourd resonator amplifies the sound, creating a distinctive and resonant tone. The instrument is often played solo or as part of a larger ensemble with other traditional Assamese instruments.
While its popularity has declined in recent years, efforts are underway to preserve and promote the Xutuli as an important part of Assamese cultural heritage.
