Wuthering Heights (1967 TV series)
Wuthering Heights (1967) is a British television adaptation of Emily Brontë's 1847 novel of the same name. It was produced by Peter Sasdy for the BBC and broadcast in November and December of 1967 as a four-part serial.
The series starred Ian McShane as Heathcliff and Angela Scoular as Catherine Earnshaw. The supporting cast included Bernard Horsfall as Edgar Linton, Helen Weir as Nelly Dean, and John Garrie as Joseph.
This adaptation is noted for its relatively faithful adherence to the novel's plot and atmosphere. Its black and white production design contributed to the bleak and brooding tone associated with Brontë's work. While largely forgotten today compared to later adaptations, it was well-received at the time of its original broadcast. Its relative obscurity is partly due to the fact that BBC television productions of that era were often wiped for archival reasons, although some episodes or clips may survive. Its contribution lies in being one of the early, and relatively complete, television interpretations of the classic novel.
