Worms (1995 video game)

Worms, released in 1995, is a turn-based strategy artillery video game developed by Team17. It is the first game in the Worms series. Players control a small team of worms across a destructible landscape, battling opposing teams. The core gameplay revolves around using a variety of weapons, ranging from bazookas and grenades to more outlandish options like exploding sheep and banana bombs, to eliminate the enemy worms.

Each turn gives the player a limited amount of time to move one of their worms and fire a weapon. Strategic considerations involve accounting for wind speed and direction, the terrain’s impact on weapon trajectories, and the relative positions of worms on the battlefield. Worms have a finite amount of health, and are eliminated when their health reaches zero, either from weapon damage or falling into the water that typically surrounds the landscape.

The game is characterized by its cartoonish graphics, humor, and the distinct voices and personalities assigned to the worms. Worms features both single-player missions and multiplayer modes, supporting up to four teams either locally or via network play. The game's success led to numerous sequels and spin-offs, establishing Worms as a prominent franchise in the strategy genre. The initial release was for the Amiga, with later ports to other platforms, including MS-DOS, PlayStation, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
