USS Garland (AM-238)

The USS Garland (AM-238) was an Admirable-class minesweeper built for the United States Navy during World War II. Named after a type of decorative arrangement of flowers and foliage, she was laid down on October 7, 1943, by the Winslow Marine Railway and Shipbuilding Co., Inc., Winslow, Washington; launched on January 15, 1944; sponsored by Mrs. G. S. Bullene; and commissioned on May 27, 1944, Lt. Comdr. J. L. Johnson, USNR, in command.

Following shakedown, Garland reported for duty in the Pacific Theater. Her primary function was clearing mines to support amphibious landings and protect naval vessels. Throughout her service in the Pacific, she participated in operations around Okinawa and other key locations, braving hazardous conditions and enemy fire. She contributed significantly to securing vital sea lanes and supporting Allied advances.

After the war, the Garland continued to serve in the Navy, performing various duties including training exercises and fleet support. She was eventually decommissioned and struck from the Naval Vessel Register.
