William Strode (1614–1676)

William Strode (1614–1676) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1640 and 1660. He was a prominent member of the Long Parliament and a supporter of the Parliamentarian cause during the English Civil War.

Strode was the son of Sir William Strode of Newnham, Devon and his wife, Eleanor, daughter of Sir John Wyndham of Orchard Wyndham, Somerset. He matriculated at Exeter College, Oxford, on 16 October 1629, aged 15, and was a student of the Middle Temple in 1631.

In November 1640, Strode was elected Member of Parliament for Bere Alston in the Long Parliament. He was a zealous Parliamentarian and a member of the Committee of Safety in 1642. He was nominated one of the commissioners to attend King Charles I at the Isle of Wight in 1648.

After Pride's Purge in December 1648, Strode was excluded from Parliament as he opposed the execution of the King. He was re-elected MP for Bere Alston in 1660 for the Convention Parliament.

Strode married firstly, in 1639, Joan Wadham, daughter of John Wadham of Merryfield, Ilton, Somerset and had issue including William Strode, MP. He married secondly, in 1651, Elizabeth Chichester, daughter of Sir John Chichester of Raleigh. He died in 1676.
