Tumin (currency)

The Tumin (Persian: تومن, also spelled toman) is a former currency of Iran. It was equivalent to 10,000 dinars and was the official currency until 1932 when it was replaced by the Rial.

While the Rial is the official currency of Iran today, the term "toman" is still widely used in daily life to express amounts of money. Iranians commonly state prices and sums of money in tomans, even though transactions are officially conducted in rials. When using tomans, one must remember that one toman equals ten rials. This can sometimes lead to confusion for tourists. For example, if someone states a price of "fifty tomans," they mean 500 rials. The habit of using tomans is deeply ingrained in Iranian culture and commerce.

There have been repeated proposals to officially redenominate the Iranian currency and reinstate the toman as the official unit of account, with one toman equaling 10,000 rials (i.e., removing four zeros). These proposals are often aimed at simplifying financial calculations and reducing the psychological impact of dealing with large numbers. However, the implementation of such a redenomination faces political and economic hurdles.
