Evil (2003 film)

Ondskan (English: Evil) is a 2003 Swedish drama film directed by Mikael Håfström, based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Jan Guillou. The film is a coming-of-age story set in the 1950s at Stjärnsberg, a prestigious boarding school where older students inflict brutal and sadistic violence and psychological abuse on younger students, and a select group of older students enforces the school's unspoken code.

The film follows Erik Ponti, a violent teenager who is expelled from his public school due to his aggressive behavior. His wealthy but physically abusive stepfather arranges for him to attend Stjärnsberg in the hopes that the strict discipline will curb his violent tendencies. At Stjärnsberg, Erik initially vows to avoid violence and endure the systematic bullying from the older students, hoping to complete his education. However, the increasing severity of the abuse, and the injustice of the school administration, test his resolve. He develops a close friendship with Pierre Tanguy, a quiet and intellectual student who becomes his confidant and moral compass.

The film explores themes of violence, bullying, social hierarchies, morality, and the consequences of suppressing one's own values in the face of adversity. It portrays the corrosive effects of institutionalized cruelty and the difficult choices Erik faces between compromising his principles and succumbing to violence once again.

Ondskan was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 76th Academy Awards. The film was generally well-received by critics, who praised its performances, direction, and exploration of complex social issues. Andreas Wilson played the lead role of Erik Ponti.
