William Spicer (Medal of Honor)

William Spicer was a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. He received the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri, on August 10, 1861. As a member of Company E, 5th Kansas Volunteer Infantry, Spicer voluntarily left his place in the ranks during a critical moment in the battle to retrieve the regimental flag, which had fallen after the color bearer was shot down. Exposing himself to heavy enemy fire, Spicer recovered the flag and returned it to the company, ensuring the regiment's continued rally. This act of bravery is cited as the reason for his Medal of Honor award. He was awarded the Medal of Honor on November 19, 1896. Further details of his life beyond his military service during the Civil War are limited.
