Sodium (horse)

Sodium was an American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1954. He was known for his stamina and versatility, competing successfully on both dirt and turf surfaces. Bred and owned by William L. Bricker, Sodium was trained by Moody Jolley.

Sodium's notable victories included the 1957 Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown. He won the Belmont in gate-to-wire fashion, defeating favored Gallant Man, who was famously pulled up near the finish line by jockey Bill Shoemaker after a misjudgment. Sodium also won the Jersey Stakes (now the Monmouth Stakes) and the Withers Stakes in 1957.

While his Triple Crown bid fell short in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, Sodium remained a consistent performer throughout his racing career. He was recognized as one of the leading three-year-old colts of his generation. After retiring from racing, Sodium was sent to stud. He sired several winners, though none achieved the same level of success as their sire. He died in 1978.
