William Carmichael (bishop)
William Carmichael (1702 – 1765) was an Irish clergyman of the Church of Ireland. He served as the Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh from 1758 to 1762, and subsequently as the Bishop of Leighlin and Ferns from 1762 until his death in 1765.
Carmichael was born in Dublin in 1702. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1722 and a Doctor of Divinity (DD) later in his career.
Details regarding his early clerical career before his episcopal appointments are somewhat scarce. He was appointed to the episcopate in 1758, being consecrated as Bishop of Clonfert and Kilmacduagh. After four years, he was translated to the more lucrative and prestigious Diocese of Leighlin and Ferns. He held this position for three years until his death in 1765.
Information on his personal life, theological views, or specific contributions to the dioceses he oversaw is limited in available historical records.
